  • The Belize Zoo Tour

It will be difficult to disregard the Belize zoo when visiting the country. It is such an interesting and educational attraction that some people believe it must be added to your must do list in Belize. This effort is an impressive expression of compassion and appreciation for wildlife shown by Sharon Matola the sole proprietor of the Belize Zoo. After finishing with their documentary on wildlife in Central America, the National Geographic Society along with Ms. Matola who was a crew member at the time couldn’t figure out what to do with the wild animals they had in captive for some time to complete there research. So, Sharon volunteer to stay and care for these animals and that’s how the Belize Zoo begun. That was way back in the early 1980s. Today the zoo has become a prominent part of the country natural heritage and tradition. Most animal there have been injured or rescue and now have found a permanent home at the zoo under the careful watch of the staff of the zoo.

So many animals could be seen very jovial and contented in there space which are separated only by chain link fences. From the shy and elusive jaguars to the elegant and photogenic spider monkeys, many beautiful species of birds including the keel bill toucan the national bird of Belize and even the largest predator bird found in the region harpy eagle they are all on display for your viewing pleasure. Don’t expect to see an elephant or giraffe, this zoo caters to only animals found within the borders of the country. The Belize zoo keeps all the animals in their natural habitat. Beside the viewing of these creatures the zoo also provide special features for those who are more daring, like sitting in a cage and have junior buddy the jaguar do somersault around and then even getting a kiss from him is possible. There in the same vicinity is also a research center for those who want to learn and do more with these incredible animals. Night tour at the zoo is fascinating.

Keel-Billed ToucanCome join the many that have enjoyed this great little zoo, it’s a treat for the entire family. The total time for the tour is about 3 hours. A 45 minutes drive from Belize City on the western highway then a little over an hour to see all the animals on display then back to the city. It’s much better to visit the Zoo in the morning, we also recommend that you bring along sun-screen, insect repellant comfortable clothing and your camera to make sure you capture the moment. It’s the perfect half day tour for nature and animal lover. A compelling and rewarding experience. The Belize Zoo awaits your present and it could all come to reality with the services of A Plus Adventures Belize. We live for adventure.
